Default (5) Alfred Lovell Stone Private G1482 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

5th of the Old Boys of my school to die in WW1.

Alfred was born 28 Sep 1894 in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, son of Richard Gower Stone, bricklayer, and his wife Lucy. Richard had also gone to St Wilfrid’s School as a boy and is mentioned in the old logbooks. Alfred had an older brother, Arthur, who later emigrated to Australia as a young man, a younger brother John who was also to lose his life in WW1 and sisters Lilly and Nora together with a young relative of his mother’s called May whom they had adopted. The family lived at 7 Gower Road.

In 1911 Alfred was an apprentice blacksmith, while John was still at school. Their older brother Arthur was an apprentice upholsterer. Alfred enlisted at the beginning of the war and was a private in 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, which left for France in 1914. Alfred died in action at Givenchy, France, on 24 Feb 1915, aged 20.

The family heard in the first instance of the loss of Alfred from other soldiers’ letters and passed the information on to the local press:

MID SUSSEX TIMES 9TH FEBRUARY 1915
MISSING
Private L Stone. In addition to Private Sawyers it appears from soldiers’ correspondence that Private Lovell Stone also of the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment son of Mr & Mrs Richard Stone of Gower Road is missing.

He had named his mother in his will to inherit everything, she was paid his effects of £3 9s 1d on 2nd October 1915 and a War Gratuity of £3 on 23 June 1919.

Alfred’s brother's granddaughter Colleen has been in touch with me from Australia and sent photos of her lost uncles which formed the centrepiece of a display about them next to the Roll of Honour board in at the school in November 2012. They will feature again on the 100th anniversaries of their deaths.
