Default Gladys Winifred Mary Smoothy, later Williams 1893-1990

Gladys Winifred Mary Smoothy, born 22 May 1893 at 21 Compton Terrace, Richmond, Surrey. Mother Emma Smoothy, formerly Broad. Father: John David Robert Smoothy, journeyman wood turner. Informant John D.R. Smoothy, 21 Compton Terrace, Mortlake Road, Richmond, Surrey.

Gladys' mother died when Gladys was 11. Her father remarried 4 years later to Marian Augusta Pitney.

Gladys went into domestic service when she was 14.

Gladys worked for a family at Ladbroke Grove and then for the private household of the doctor at The Priory, Roehampton.

During WW1, another servant, Edith, persuaded her to write to a soldier, cousin of Edith's husband Frank Smith. This cousin was Angus Williams, her future husband. Whilst they were courting, they spent time in Putney Park, at Woking, and Sipson.

They lived at Cobden Road and Park Road Hythe for the first few years of their marriage, Angus worked as a shoe repairer. Their children were all born at these address:

But in the 1930s, Angus lost this job and was never regularly in work again until WW2. The family lived at various addresses in Kent: Lymbridge Green, Stelling Minnis, Stowting and Wye.

They moved from Silks Farm, Ashford to 3 Subdown Cottages, East Brabourne, a council house with a range in the front room for cooking, and a copper for washing in the back room.

After Angus' death, Gladys moved to a bungalow at 6, Sandy Place, Smeeth, Kent.

She moved to Gore Hill House, Ashford, an old people's home, in her early 90s. Here she had her hair permed and worried that it made her look "fast" and also rejected breakfast in bed as it was "slummocky".
