His tip about not connecting your DNA test to a combined tree for yourself and your partner is wrong. When you look at a DNA match's surnames (or they look at yours), it is only including direct ancestors of the people whose tests match each other. My test is linked to my combined tree for me and my partner and it has never caused any problems.
