Theirs was the most basic of the cottage types with a smallholding, after her husband hanged himself in 1848, she continued to live there with various of her children and then in 1871 grandson Richard Harland. Found a newspaper report for 1859 which says she was visiting her husband's niece Elizabeth Compton at Nash House, Lindfield who "dropped a corpse" after a hearty meal. In 1848 her husband hanged himself leaving her to cope alone. She also brought up her youngest daughter's illegitimate son.
