Julie, I think this might be her in 1861, living Milverton:

Betty Callard, Head, W, 70, House Proprietor, Milveton

Ref: RG9; Piece: 1609; Folio: 91; Page: 4

Thanks Sabrina, that is her. A cousin looked for her but obviously not under Betty.

Thanks Libby. I have edited above.
I am wondering about the occupation in 1871 of "House Proprietor". Would that mean that she owned her own house and had private means, so that she wouldn't get put in the Workhouse? Has anyone had this written on their census for occupation?

Yes, I've seen it quite a few times, Julie. I think it means she owned another house or houses and rented them out.

I'm not sure if I have the right person in 1861 and 1871 now Kate. Libby found a Betty married to a publican Benjamin in 1841 and my Elizabeth was married to a ag lab James who we can't find in 1841. I only found her definitely in 1851 and haven't found her death. Do you think I should remove the entries for 1861 and 1871?

Julie...are you positive the 1851 is your Betty/Elizabeth???

I'd leave the other up there as you have but see if we can sort them. I thought we found that 'other' Mrs Callard as well.

I'll double check.

Hi Lib. On the 1851 Cenus at Elizabeth is with her unmarried children. Ten years after this her son John was sponsored by his brother in law John Thomas Sloman and arrived in Aus 16 May 1861 on the "Nile". John (actually called Jimmy like his father) never married. So I feel Betty either lived on with her unmarried dau Elizabeth or she died. Unfortunately while the Milverton death register is supposed to go up to 1890, it goes from I think Feb 1860 then March 1890. So either a big gap or a mistranscription and only to 1860. The Betsey you found in 1841 married to Benjamin the publican isn't mine. I think Betsey in the Censuses of 1861 and 1871 are the publican's wife, not my ag lab James wife. I don't think my ancestor would have property, but the publican's wife would.
