I thnk this might be James' family in 1841, without him:
1841 Census CALLOW, Betty WELLINGTON, Somersetshire HO107 piece 951 folio 8/25 page 11 Address: High Street, Milverton CALLOW, Betty F 50 1791 Somerset Washerwoman CALLOW, William M 20 1821 Somerset Ag. Lab CALLOW, John M 15 1826 Somerset Mason CALLOW, Elizabeth F 15 1826 Somerset CALLOW, Robert M 12 1829 Somerset FMP transcribes them as Callow, and the image clearly shows the surname as Callow – the enumerator obviously couldn’t spell their surname. |

Thanks Elizabeth, as he was an ag labourer, it is possible that he was following seasonal work.

I have found HO107/222 Fol 7 Page 8 at Halberton, Devon, Parish Sampford Peverell, Address Higher Town. Head is Woodbury, Henry 60 Ag Lab, Woodbury, Mary 60, Collard, James 50 Ag Lab, Born Devon. (This fits my James.) On Fam search it give the reg district as Tiverton & Dulverton, which matches with the Slomans, who his daughter Sarah married into. The Slomans moved back and forwards between Tiverton in Devon and Milverton in Somerset. I think this is fairly promising.
Looked for a baptism - James Collard 11/6/1791 at Saint Sidwell, Exeter Devon, Parents John and Betty. Marriage of John Collard and Betty Cole at Saint Sidwell, Exeter 15/7/1782. Children: Baptised Saint Sidwell, Exeter - Thomas Colas Collard 15/6/1783-30/9/1792; Lucia 19/5/1785; William 3/12/1788; James 11/6/1791; George 13/6/1794. Julie, I saw that one yesterday. I meant to post it.
Sampford Peverell isn't so far from Milverton, so it could well be him. I also found this baptism, but it might be slightly early, but only 2 years out if he was 60 when he died. Parish Records Collection - baptism Forename(s): James Surname: Callard Year: 1785 Month: Apr Day: 13 Father's Forename: James Mother's Forename: Elizabeth Place: Plymouth County: Devon Page: 82 Archive Ref: 166/7/a Record source: Baptism Register - Transcripts Data provider: Plymouth & West Devon Record Office Collection |

Yes I saw that too Elizabeth, but I thought Plymouth is a bit far away. While it gave age 60 on his burial, I'm always suspicious of a zero in an age at death. You know: Q - How old? Oh, Around 60 lol No easy answers this with one I'm afraid. Fair chance his mother is Elizabeth/Betty, but which one? Many thanks. Lot more digging.
