There is a Thomas Portman baptised 20 Jan 1739 at Luccombe, Somerset, parents Thomas and Anne. This couple also had a daughter Mary baptised 11 Sep 1742.

But also there are a Thomas and Mary Portman who had a daughter Susanna baptised 2 Jun 1745 at Timberscombe. This couple are probably Thomas Portman and Mary Taylor who married 7 Jun 1737 at Carhampton, so they probably had some children before Susanna. Maybe a son Thomas?

Mary Portman, wife of Thomas, buried 9 Apr 1758 Timberscombe.

Following on from post #2 above, now the Somerset PR's are on Ancestry:

My Thomas got married (for the first time) 5 Oct 1765 at Timberscombe.

Susanna Portman (presumably the one baptised 1745) got married on the 24th Sep 1765 at Timberscombe. Hers is the marriage entry just before Thomas's. Also Mary Portman got married 6 Apr 1763 at Timberscombe. Unfortunately none of them had a Portman as a witness.

I can't find a marriage between a Thomas Portman and an Anne who could be the parents of the Thomas and Mary baptised at Luccombe (very close to Timberscombe). I can't find a death for Anne. I can't find any children of Thomas and Mary baptised between their marriage in 1737 and the baptism of Susanna in 1745.

I am very much tempted to say that Mary and Anne are the same person and that my Thomas (jr) is the one baptised in 1738 at Luccombe. Opinions please?

Taylor is a bummer of a name, but have you found any candidates for Mary (Ann) Taylor?

I note that Grace had a daughter Susannah. It's not the rarest of names, but it's possible she's named after Grace's aunt.

I would say that your theory is entirely possible, since the name changes are in different parishes, but it could simply be different families. Do you know anything about the vicars of the respective parishes? Are the records immaculately kept, or are there the suggestions of gaps?

I haven't started looking for Taylors yet. Will do that today though. Would be good if I could find a Mary Ann!

I don't know anything about the vicars, but there don't seem to be gaps in the PR's and they are very small parishes with only a few entries per year.

It all sounds very plausable, Kate, but I may not be the one to judge as I've had all sorts of problems with my Somerset families (people not being who I thought they were etc!).

Thanks, Merry.

There is a Mary Tailor baptised 3 Dec 1719 Carhampton, daughter of James and Mary, who is likely the one who married in 1737. Not a Mary Ann, sad to say, but I do still think she is probably the same person as Anne. There is a baptism for Thomas Portman in 1713 at Wootton Courtney, son of Amos and Susanna, and a burial in 1787 at Luccombe, age 72.
