I've added the specifics for burial provided by the burial receipt in the possession of my family in England.

In 1841 there is a George Spence working as a Male Servant for a farmer, James Waddington, in the Knaresborough district:
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/recor...1%2f0009556983 This would fit in with George becoming a groom. His age is given as 15, but the ages of the servants are all multiples of 5! Edit: I don't think this is him now. See 1841 Census below. Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 19-04-16 at 14:59. |

There are a William and Ann Spence in Knaresborough producing children in the 1820s. William is a butcher and a publican:
Maria bapt. 6 May 1821 William a publican William bapt. 19 February 1826 William a Butcher Robert bapt. 4 April 1830 William a Butcher Ann bapt. 13 July 1835 Butcher They appear on the 1841 Census: http://search.findmypast.co.uk/recor...1%2f0009550494 with children Maria 20, William 15, Robert 11, Ann 6 and Jane 11 months. William and Ann both 40. He a butcher. I'm mentioning them for elimination purposes because I don't think they are your family. The only other baptism of interest I have found is this: William bapt. 11 May 1831 This time the father William is a labourer. Also the birth is just 2 years after George's baptism. They are given as living at Brereton. For George's entry they are living at "Brearton", so it looks like the same William and Ann. http://search.findmypast.co.uk/recor...ap%2f207481660 First name(s) William Last name Spence Baptism year 1831 Baptism date 11 May 1831 Baptism place Knaresborough Denomination Anglican Father's first name(s) William Mother's first name(s) Ann County Yorkshire (West Riding) Country England Archive North Yorkshire County Record Office Archive reference 1/9 Page 155 Record set Yorkshire Baptisms |

Genuki gives the spelling as Brearton. It is 4 miles north of Knaresborough.

I trust you already saw my email response earlier today, Elizabeth. Thank you so much for all your efforts. It's going on midnight now and I'm going cross-eyed!There's an awful lot of material here to work through. I knew that a lot had appeared online since the last time I worked on George Spence, but I didn't realize just how much. I'll post what I've looked at so far. I'm trying to move slowly and carefully, incorporating new finds into my tree as I go.
The numbers refer to your post numbers. ================================================ #4 Quote:

Have not tried to trace this one forward or back, so for now it will remain an intriguing speculation. I did notice on one of the censuses that there was a Waddington who was a close neighbor of my Spences. Could be a total red herring. ================================================ #6 There are so many Spences! I agree with you that the William and Ann Spence the butcher/publican are not mine. That other William baptized 11 May 1831 does look like a possible sibling to my George. ================================================ #8 I had not seen this marriage of William Spence and Ann Scaife, so thank you very much for that, Elizabeth. Yes, the Spence family were in Newton upon Ouse. ================================================ |
