I am wracking my brains to think why John's brother in law would put down Anglesey as the birth place of his wife and John, if he did not believe that to be correct. In which case, why did John subsequently claim to have been born in Liverpool.
Anglesey is not vastly populated even now, and in those days would have been less so; that family in 1841 is more than likely to be the same as the one in Merthyr in 1861. ALSO......John's children's names may be another pointer: His siblings in 1841: Mary Catherine Elinor William Ann Elizabeth His children include: Catherine Eleanor Elizabeth William Ann

I think you should put the 1851 miner from Liverpool on the back burner for the time being, as he could easily be a red herring!

I agree about 1851.
I think that I will send for that certificate and give the father as a point of reference......you never know, the GRO might just take notice!!

Keep your fingers crossed..........no email as yet from GRO to say that the marriage does not exist between those two people on that date!
I applied five days ago, so even allowing for the weekend I would normally have had the notification of a "no find" by now.

At ease Merry.......the cert has arrived!
Hmmmm, strange that Merthyr Records Offices couldn't find this, but anyway John Jones married Ann Harris on 23rd October 1863 in the Parish Church. He was down as a Master Miner, which I guess fits in with the Contractor thing, but there are no ages given unfortunately. John's father was William Jones, also a Miner and Ann's father was David Harris, a Farmer. Ann's address was Dowlais, and John's was what looks like Pennydarran. Witnesses were John Edwards and Gwendoline Bevan. So........... that family in Anglesey are not right. I am now off to see if I can find William Jones in 1841

I'm glad the Anglesey family are definitely wrong as I wouldn't have felt too happy with them!
I guess it's likely John was born in Liverpool but his father was born in Wales.

How annoying is this 1851 census?
HO107; Piece: 2472; Folio: 8; Page: 9; GSU roll: 104226-104227. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?...=&pid=15688241 (right at the bottom)
