Default Will of John Moult, 1788, surgeon of Rochdale

I am finding more wills listed as being proved at Chester but not on the FMP Cheshire wills index.

Type Surname First Details
Supra
Moult John of Rochdale, surgeon 1788
(found on the Lancashire wills website)

Name: Moult, John
Dates: 1788
Place: Rochdale, Cheshire, England
Book: Births Anno 1657. (Birth)
Collection: Cheshire: - Wills and Inventories, 1781-1790
Volume: List of the Wills Now Preserved in the Probate Registry, Chester.
Chapter: From the Year 1781 to 1790 Inclusive.
Text: Moult, John, of Rochdale, surgeon 1788
(from Ancestry)

This will was subject to Chancery proceedings:
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...e/394/data.pdf

This man was related to Abel Hyde and his wife Sarah, maiden name Hollingworth. Sarah's parents were Higham Hollingworth and his wife Sarah, maiden name MOULT. Her father was Thomas Moult, whose will I have.

I'm trying to piece together the relationships of the Moult/Hollingworth family.

This is in Abel Hyde's will (proved 1792) :
"And whereas My Relation John MOULT of Rochdale Surgeon Did by his last Will Bequeath to My aforesaid Wife or the Heirs of Her Body one Seventh part of his real and Personal Estates..."

John Moult was buried on 2nd March 1788 at St Chad's, Rochdale.

Sarah had a brother called Alexander Hollingworth (parents Higham and Sarah).

I'm hoping by cross-referencing I can work out how they are all related.

Sarah Moult had two brothers - John and Thomas. All three are mentioned in their father's will - Thomas Moult 1721 of Hollingworth.

So the surgeon John Moult could be Sarah's brother - no indication of his profession in the will. John might have had a wife called Susanna. She is named as a daughter-in-law right after he is mentioned. Then a daughter-in-law Elizabeth is mentioned right after Thomas Moult junior.

Elizabeth

I have vague memories of trying to find a will for someone from Rochdale and it turned up in Yorkshire because part of Rochdale came under the Western Deaneries historically. I don't know if that would apply here.

Thank, OC. I think my first port of call will be to e-mail Cheshire Archives as it says it was proved at Chester.

This is a very tangled web!

According to the London Gazette:

one seventh of the estate was to go to Sarah Goodman
She was the daughter of Alexander Hollingworth, the sister of Sarah Hyde. Sarah Goodman lived at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire
I now think that this is Sarah wife of George Goodman and daughter of Thomas Moult of Eccles.

one seventh of the estate was to go to Emanuel Moult of Chinley, Glossop, Derbyshire, Gentleman

one seventh of the estate was to go to William Moult of Mellor, Glossop, Gentleman

one seven of the estate to Sarah Hide or Hyde as mentioned about (OH's 6x-great-grandmother)

Also it is stated that the grandfather of John Moult the testator was James Grandfather of Manchester - possible a merchant - by his 2nd wife, maiden name Pearson.

I found a marriage between a James Grantham and an Elizabeth Pearson at Bowdon, Cheshire. I wonder if that is the connection.

Name: James Grantham
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 10 Feb 1696
Event Place: , Bowdon, Cheshire, England
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth Pearson

Just found this on FMP:

Quote:
The Cheshire Wills and Probate records include all surviving original wills of Cheshire residents proved at the Chester diocesan consistory court 1492 – 1857 and registered copies made at Chester Probate Registry 1858-1911.
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/searc...ls-and-probate

So Lancs residents presumably aren't included in the index.

Mary, thanks for the information. It helps make sense of this, but it's very frustrating. I have found a couple more earlier wills which also don't appear.

I have gone from nothing for this branch to being totally overwhelmed with information. I have quite a few wills waiting to be transcribed. It's very satisfying, but I would have liked to have told OH's mother about all this before she died. She died just a month ago, aged 98.

Ah, that's a shame.

My mum, auntie and grandma would have loved to hear all the information I've found about their ancestors, but sadly they all died before I got started on genealogy.
(My dad would have been totally shocked about what I've found about his side...)
