Default What hapened to the Beckingsale children.

I think someone here is going to regret suggesting a £20.00 ancestry sub!

In my tree I have Selina Horne and her sister Louisa who marry two brothers Richard and John Beckingsale. The name is badly mistranscribed by ancestry but I think Richard and Selina have children Thomas 1836, John 1838, George 1839 and Ann 1841. Richard the father dies in Cheltenham in 1845 and Selina dies in Australia in 1882. She does not appear to have remarried.

I think Louisa and John have children Louisa 1839, Emma 1840, Henry 1841 and Charles 1847. Louisa died in 1850 in Cirencester and John in 1855 but what happened to the children. John is on his own with them on the 1851 census.

Trees on ancestry suggest that some of them went to Australia and New zealand.

You have already found Thomas in New Zealand but I had not discovered the other children then.

Ancestry have Selina Beckingscale age 46 arriving at Melbourne, Australia, from Liverpool, 14 Jan 1858 on the Planter (on the Victoria Assisted and Unassisted Passenger Lists) but there is no image to view. They also list "Som" (presumably should be "Tom" 22, George 19 and Ann 17.

Thanks Kite, that is good, Women were certainly brave in those days. I am surprised she did not remarry as I thought women were in short supply in the early days. There is a family tree on Ancestry which has a marriage for George in Australia and names about eight children.

The Australian Marriage Index on ancestry shows a George Beckingsale marrying a Mary Louisa Pick in Victoria in 1863, and their Australian Death Index has Geo Beckingsale dying in 1892 at Castlemaine, Victoria, age 54, father Richd, mother Selina Horn.

There are also these deaths with parents George and Mary Louisa:
Jno Richd Beckingsale 1925 Elsternwick, Victoria, age 61
Herbert Beckingsale 1941 Toorak, Victoria, age 75
Geo Hy Beckingsale 1891 Castlemaine, Victoria, age 17

And these births:
John Richard 1864 Castlemaine, Victoria
Emma 1866 Castlemaine, Victoria
Herbert 1868 The Loddon, Victoria
Maud Malvina 1870 Castlemaine, Victoria
Thomas 1872 Castlemaine, Victoria
George Henry 1874 The Loddon, Victoria
Elizabeth Jane 1877 Castlemaine, Victoria
Charles 1879 Castlemaine, Victoria
Gerald Octavius 1882 Castlemaine, Victoria

NZ BDM index shows a death in 1928 for Charles Beckingsale aged 80, and for Henry in 1928 aged 86.

There are also marriages for them and for Emma Beckingsale in the 1860s in NZ. Children are listed in birth index for both Charles and Henry and Emma.

There are burials listed on the Dunedin Cemeteries website for Henry and family. Charles and his family, and also Emma and her family (Rainforth) are buried at Oamaru (cemetery records also online).

Also look at PapersPast NZ, National Library NZ has digitised newspapers live NLA has done for Trove.

Castlemaine and The Loddon in Victoria in those days were gold mining settlements. Julie

Thanks everyone. I don't think the family would have been gold miners. The Horne family had a large grocery business. Selina and Louisa's brother Thomas emigrated to New Zealand so perhaps he took Louisa's children with him. I think I found OOmaru parish records online so I will take another look. It looks as though the ancestry tree is right. I will contact the owner. I don't like accepting ancestry trees without some other proof. They have a death for Annie in a lunatic assylum in Castlemaine. I have to go to work soon but I will have another look tomorrow.
