Eliza White, Great Elm, Somerset
I would love some more help please:
On the 7 August 1820, John Wilmot of Whatley, Somerset, was married at St. Mary’s Church, Elm, Somerset to Eliza White, of the parish of Elm. Witnesses Ellen and Gertrude Smyth. It was recorded in the Bishop’s Transcripts, that it occurred with Banns and with consent of Parents. Can anyone view the actual marriage/banns record and see whether Eliza’s father is named? I am fairly sure that John is a son of Robert Wilmot and Mary Shipton of Mells, Whatley, Somerset. However there are two Eliza White’s who appear to be born with a couple of months of each other. as they were baptised at Elm Somerset in 1798: 27/5/1798 – parents Charles and Martha. 22/7/1798 – parents Richard and Elizabeth. Eliza Wilmot died at Whatley, Somerset and was buried 9/2/1879 aged 81. Many thanks. Julie G. There was a Wilmot daughter Elizabeth and their 8th child a son Charles... Isn't it odd that consent of parents was required even though they were both over 21?
The marriage entry on Ancestry gives the same information you mentioned in post #1.

Oh, forget that; the vicar has written with consent of parents for all the marriages!

Through Whatley records on Dusty docs I found Wilmots were very entrenched there for hundreds of years.
Although, the earliest I have traced back, of the family I am researching, is the marriage of John's parents, Robert Wilmot & Mary Shipton in 1797. Living in Whatley in the 1851 and 1861 Census, John had about 20acres of land. In 1871 he was a shopkeeper. I would love to know the address on these Census, if someone could look it up please. Thank you. Julie |
