What a name (or family of them) !
I was just following up on a wife in the outer part of my family tree -
Ida Clara Ruth Jane Hart Castles married John Worner in Victoria in 1912.. In Trove, I was just scanning for family details, and found her siblings who were generally referred to in family notices by their initials - Roden Howard Nelson Z Blake Castles Hezikiah Theophilus Eras F S Castles Isiah Claude Tryndale L W Castles Amos Coverdale Latimer James W Castles Ross Cranmer Ridley Gideon W Castles Uriah Melanchthon Wickliffe G W Castles Paul Coursy Joshua John H Castles Hill Knox Gordon Haveloc Moses Castles Watt Booth Wolsley Browning Drake Castles Vine Victoria Mary Olive M E Castles and Myrtle Mary Edith Castles Their parents were James and Harriet Castles. I think Myrtle died young and I have not found all her initials Thankfully, they did not seem to continue the extravagant naming, they settled on two given names for their own children. Edit Just found some more initials in the Will of Watt. ( I wonder if some of the Ws were Wood, Harriet's maiden name) Last edited by marquette; 28-06-14 at 11:31. Reason: more |

My grandfather was saddled with three middle names, and he insisted that none of his children should have any middle names at all!

Wow! Not just the number of names, but the quality! Makes up for the umpteen John and Thomas and Mary and Susans we come across!!

Coverdale, Cranmer, Melancthon, Knox: I think they are trying to say something there!

If only all families had such memorable names our hobby would be so much easier!

It does if they stick with the memorable name, but on my tree people with memorable names drop them and become known by either an ordinary middle name or by an apparently randomly chosen, but definitely ordinary name!

They seemed to be trying to cover all the bases - biblical, family, etc but they did seem to be known by their first two names.
4 of them served in WW1 - Watt (died at Villiers Bretonneux), Roden, Hill and Uriah are all enlisted under their first two names. |

If only Dad had told me Uncle Mick’s real given names were Julius Oxford, I might have found him earlier. Do you know how many Michael Flannerys I went through? lol
