As I have discovered for myself. From childhood I was desperate to know about my missing grandfather. That was the aim in first taking up family history. When I did find out about him and what he had done I realized that he wasn't the mythical hero I had built him up to be in my imagination but a man who I am sure I wouldn't have liked if I'd known him. It changed my view of my grandmother too when I found how badly he had behaved towards her.

I've counted at least 11 children - two each with his European wives and the seven with Nancy mentioned in the letter plus possibly some with his first country wife. He wasn't a nice man at all and, it would seem, not even by the standards of the day.

I want to know how William Edward Drewett and Emma Grace Elizabeth Russell met, but can't find anything between her childhood in Canada and their marriage in Edmonton (the north London one, not the other one) on 18 November 1902.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Kevin's father had done some research beforehand. Maybe he got stuck trying to trace Nancy or maybe he had found she was Matooski but that bit was left out to make a better programme. Whichever, the whole Clifton family seemed really interested in their history so they may well take it all further. I certainly would! With all those McTavish children there must be lots of distant relatives around!

The fact that Matooskie was mentioned by name made it clear to me that there was something to find. It's such an unusual and specific name.
