Default William Steel (MMFF)

Name - "official" name and what they were known as:
William Steel

Date and place of birth:
c1830, Stedham, Sussex

Names of parents:
William Steel & Mary nee Collins

Date and place of baptism - if applicable:
not found

Details of each of his or her marriages - if any:
15 Feb 1857 @ parish church (St Mary) Islington to Harriet Glazier, both signed their names, witnesses T Thompson, S Hughes.

Occupation(s) - if any:
Sawyer Have now got all of his children's baptisms on 3 of which he is a sailor 1864-1868

Addresses where they lived - and please list which censuses you have or haven't found him/her on.
1841: Stedham, Sussex
1851: not found, possibly at sea
1857: at marriage, 15 Halton Place, Islington, (same address as his wife’s sister Mary)
1861: Minsted, near Stedham, Sussex
1871: 2 New Road Cottages, Rustington, Sussex
1881: Elm Cottage, The Street, Rustington


Date, place and cause of death:
07 Sep 1883 @ Rustington of dropsy & kidney disease.

Date and place of burial / cremation:
11 Sep 1883 Rustington, aged 54.

Details of will / administration of their estate - if applicable: looked for, none found.

Memorial inscription - if any: none found in Rustington churchyard.

I have now found his seaman's ticket no 441173 issued 29 March 1849 at Falmouth. It gives his birthdate as 28 June 1831 born at Stedham, Sussex. He had black hair, blue eyes and was 5' 4". He was at sea 1851-1853.

Numbers in the outward voyage column for 1851 are the numbers 546.64.12 and below it -1 -1 7= while in the inward for 1853 again 546.64.12 and below that 64.8.8

64 and 12 are the port numbers for London and Bideford, 1 is Aberdeen, don't know what 546 refers to.

Jill, I have lots of Aylings from Stedham, but much earlier.

My OH has an Ayling, but probably from Northchapel.
