Take One G-Grandparent etc boards to be reopened

As requested by members, we are reopening the closed "Take One Great-Grandparent" etc boards so that people can add new threads for any ancestors who were missed out first time round. For the month of November, the "Take One Grandparent", "Take One Great-Grandparent", "Take One 2xGreat-Grandparent" and "Take One 3xGreat-Grandparent" boards will be reopened for you to add new threads, and then in December, it will be the turn of the "Take One 4xGreat-Grandparent" and "Take Two 5xGreat-Grandparent" boards, so that people can get up-to-date ready for when we start looking at 6xg-grandparents in the new year.

For those who don't know what this is all about, the idea is to post a thread about each of your direct ancestors (and your OH's as well, if you are doing his / her tree), filling in basic information such as date and place of birth, occupation, places of residence etc, finding out what information you are missing, and trying to fill it in. (There will be a template at the top of each board showing what information to include.) Other members will look at the threads and help you fill in the blanks. This can help you get past "brick walls" and trace your tree back further. Also, other people researching the same ancestors can find these threads by Googling and will be able to join our forum and contact you this way, so you may find long-lost relatives and distant cousins.

If you have taken part in this before, it would be a good opportunity to look back through those boards, and add any direct ancestors who you didn't post first time round, but also to go back through your old threads to see if you can fill in any missing pieces of information, as lots of new databases have come online since we first started with Take One Great-Grandparent back in Nov 2009 (is it really that long ago?! )

Since we began reviewing our ancestors with the Take One Great-Grandparent board in Nov 2009 we have introduced our Surname Database for members to use.

Please consider adding surnames to our database if you have not already done so. Taking your tree from your own generation back to your 3xgreat-grandparents may mean you have as many as 32 ancestral surnames! Please feel free to add these surnames to our database - it's really easy to do - just click Surname Database at the top of the forum, click My Surname Interests and then Add New Surname.

If we can increase the number of surnames in the database there will be a greater chance of finding people researching the same names as you and/or having ancestors from the same towns and villages.

If you have already started a thread about an ancestor when we originally introduced these boards and you would like others to take a second look at the information you have put together, then please add a post to your old thread so that it comes to the top of the board. Thanks.

The easiest way to find your old threads is to click the 'Search' option at the top of the forum and select 'Advanced Search'.

Under 'Search by User Name' enter your user name and select the second option ('Find Threads Started by User') from the drop-down box under that. Then select which forum(s) you want to look at under 'Search in Forum(s)' (you can select more than one forum by holding down the Control key when you select).

Click 'Search Now' at the bottom. of the screen.

Don't forget to add your ancestral surnames to our Surname Database
