Ah, SSC means Solicitor of the Supreme Court, according to this short obit, which confirms that he's Arthur's son:

There's an Alan C Fairbrother in the Glasgow phone book from 1968 to 1977 (not at the same address as the others), and SP is showing a death for Alan Charles Fairbrother in 1977.
Another Google book snippet: Oxford University calendar University of Oxford - 1941 - Snippet view 1939 Fairbrother, Alan Charles Whit- ton Lydeard 1939 Fairbrother, Colin Stevenson ... http://books.google.co.uk/books?ei=Y...#search_anchor |

Alan gets a mention in the London Gazette in 1942:
http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issu...upplements/279 http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issu...upplements/280 Not sure how to read it; he was with the RAF volunteer reserve, and I assume it means he was a leading aircraftman, appointed as probationary pilot officer (emergency). Gunner Colin Stevenson Fairbrother got an emergency commission as 2nd lieutenant in the Indian Army in 1942: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/35912/pages/892 Last edited by Mary from Italy; 21-12-10 at 17:58. |

Many thanks for all of these links. The Google book search isn't showing the right bit but the Andrews Newspaper clipping on Ancestry gives the full story. And usefully gives addresses, which explains why Elizabeth died where she did. Interesting how Alan's last forename got corrupted from Lidyard (unless the newpaper mangled it of course).

I wonder if Elizabeth's maiden name was Whitton or Stevenson?

An interesting thought. I haven't yet looked in familyrelatives overseas BMDs to see if the marriage is there. I've now expanded on your phone book finds and found Alan in Finchley Road from 1936 to 1940 and Elizabeth in Campsie Glen in 1942-44.

We have noted your posts of 2010 expressing an interest in our ancestors Arthur Fairbrother and his wife, Elizabeth Ann.
For your information, Arthur Fairbrother died in January 1938, and Elizabeth's maiden name was Smith. We are curious why you were interested in these particular members of our family. |

Welcome to GF Alan. The connection is our common Lidyard ancestry.
Joseph Lidyard (1796-1878) and Grace Walker (1796-1867) had ten children. Ann Lidyard (1830-1916) was their 5th. child and my great-grandmother. They also had 2 daughters named Elizabeth. The first one died and the second one (1840 to 1914) was their 10th. child. She married Alfred Robert Fairbrother, and I've simply traced that branch forward. So Arthur Lidyard Fairbrother, one of the 3 children I found, is my 1st. cousin twice removed, and you must therefore be my third cousin! |
