Default Like father, like son?

A John LINFIELD (variously spelled) married an Elizabeth in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex in 1697. Family search comes up with these baptisms:

Elizabeth Lynfield 1698
John Linfilde 1700
Susanna Linfield 1702
William Lindfield 1706
Sarah Lindfeild 1709
Nathaniel Lindfeild 1711
Thomas Lindfeild 1711
John Lindfield 1714
Thomas Lindfield 1715
Mary Lindfield 1716
Elizabeth Lindfield 1718
Sarah Linfield 1721
Anne Lindfield 1725
John Lindfield 1728
Susanna Lindfield 1731

Nathaniel and Thomas are twins. There are some baptisms, children of John and Mary up to 1706, suggesting that the John who married in 1697 was a young man. Even so, his poor wife CANNOT have born children over a 34 year period.

Can anyone find other marriages for Johns and Elizabeth? I'm beginning to wonder whether there were at least three of them!

I don't understand why the children of John and Mary suggest that the John who married in 1697 was young? There is a John and Mary marriage in 1698.

Is this the Susanna baptised in 1702?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61...=743&cat=75311

(image no 744)
March 16th Susanna Daughter of John and Elizabeth Linvile (Yeoman) was Baptized.

The John who was having children with Mary at that time is down as a Day Labourer.

Then there is a baptism of Sarah, daughter of John and Elizabeth Lingvile, baptised 7 Mar 1704/5, missing from your list. She is buried 2 Nov 1705 as Lindfield.

I bet some sites don't consider Lin(g)vile as a variant of Linfield, so will have another look for the second John / Elizabeth marriage! But will just browse through those BT's first.

Then the 1709 Sarah is the daughter of Mr John and Elizabeth Lindfeild, which fits with him being a yeoman.

No, you are right. It was the way they petered out that suggested an older man, but there is another John/Mary marriage on the previous page as well.

I was going through the originals - and there are both registers and BTs - but I think this requires wet towels round the head and a stiff whiskey - to see whether any of the burials are of wives/infants etc.

Thanks for spotting those, Kite. Ancestry ignores Lindfield (which must be the closest spelling to the village) so it wouldn't find Lin(g)vile.

I appear to be descended from Ann bp 1725 as she helpfully mentions her parish when she marries, miles away, at Old Shoreham in 1750.

"Goodman John Lindfield" buried 30 Jun 1713, but presumably of a previous generation, since the children baptised after that still have "Mr John" as father.

John son of John Linfield was buried 13 Mar 1714/5, so definitely not a very young father of the last children on your list.

The later children don't have "Mr John" as father, just "John", but it might not be significant. The 1731 page does have other people referred to as Mr or Goodman, but not John, so that does suggest that it is a different John having children by then.

Sorry, no luck looking for the later marriage under Lin(g)vile either. But I don't think all Sussex records are online yet.

Thanks for looking, Kite. A different pair of eyes gives a new perspective. I wish that marriage allegations or bonds for Sussex survived, but I have seen no evidence that they do.

Sussex Marriage CD shows

at Hurstpierpoint

John Linfield and Mary Jenner (Ginner) 19 May 1685

John Lynfield and Elizabeth Dumbrell 20 Jul 1697

John Lynfield and Mary Harland 23 Sep 1698

There's a marriage licence at Lewes that says Elizabeth D was from Cuckfield.

There's a marriage for John Linfield and Elizabeth Jenner 25 May 1697 at Cuckfield.

I can't see a later John and Elizabeth marriage, I will have a look at the baptisms and burials
