I have not even glanced at their children, Mary! (other than seeing they had some). Where did you see that?

He'll be listed in the C of E clergy database sooner or later, but it only goes up to 1835 ordinations so far, and he was ordained in 1838. It may or may not have more information than the Cambridge Alumni database gives.

The Italian text reads as follows:
BB12B §1297/ FREDERICA WILLIAMS/ ENGLAND/ Cross. Marble sculptor unknown. 19th c., post 1/1873. Cross made of white marble at the back, triangular slab (?) carved with vine and ivy tendrils on a glossy red granite base, marble dirty. Possible cleaning work. [M: Cross (?): A: 161; L: 76.5; P: 31; M: Slab (?): A: 27; L: 70.5; P: 157.5; Granite A: 22; L: 86; P: 200.] English inscription in Roman capital letters and Arabic numerals: IN MEMORY OF/ FREDERICA, YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF THE LATE REV. JAMES WILLIAMS, A.M./ OF PENDLEY MANOR, HERTS,/ BORN AT TRING PARK, HERTS, FEBRUARY 27TH 1857,/ DIED AT FLORENCE JANUARY 27TH, 1873/ "SHE IS NOT DEAD, BUT SLEEPETH"/ LUKE VIII.52 VERSE/ Alphabetical register of persons buried in the Pinti Cemetery: Williams/ Frederick / James / America/ Florence / 27 January / 1873/ Age 18/ 1297/ [Incorrect gender, nation]/ (in French) Miss Federica Williams, America, daughter of James and Elisabeth née Grout/ GL Burial 30/01, Rev Tottenham/ Fine Arts 1993-1997 form/ Swiss Reformed Evangelical Church, 1827-2010. Cippo and lastra both mean tombstone; judging by the photo, I assume that cippo refers to the vertical cross and lastra to the horizontal (triangular) slab above the base. Thank you Mary. I spent ages looking through the Cambridge Alumni and decided he must have gone to Oxford! lol
Thanks very much for that about Frederica's death - I doubt I would have ever come across it.

I looked at Cambridge first because when I googled, I saw that his son Joseph Grout Williams went there (although he went to Trinity College).

A bit late and probably irrelevant but I was under the impression that illegitimate persons could NOT become C of E clergy.
Either Mr Grout was an exceedingly kind chap, adopting the son in law to give him a respectable background, OR...Mr Grout was his real daddy/real daddy's agent. I know which scenario I prefer! OC |
