Default Can't find a death

Chap in question is William Ehn - sometimes transcribed as Enn or Elm.
Middle name sometimes given as Edward.

William was born 1792 in London.

In 1851 William was living at Duke Street, St Bartholemew the Great in London.

He is a witness for a wedding 04 Aug 1857 of his stepson Lewis Marsden at St James Clerkenwell.

But he is recorded as deceased on his daughter Clara's marriage cert on 04 Oct 1857 at St John the Baptist, Hoxton.

In 1861 his wife Matilda is listed as a widow living at 24 Westmoreland Place, Shoreditch, London.

So a window of 2 months - but I can't find a death or a burial.
Help!

Are there no other Williams in the family who could have been the witness, Nell?

Hi Kite

No, he only had daughters and his father was called George. Thanks for looking, I'm glad it's not just me!

That wedding was 4 Aug 1851 not 1857!

And I wonder if the '(deceased)' on the 1857 marriage cert for Clara is crossed out? I had thought those marks across the word had come through from the other side of the page as they slope the 'wrong' way (if you are right handed!), but there's nothing on the reverse of the sheet, or on the opposite page if the register was closed before the ink had dried for that entry.

EDIT: Having said that, under the fathers' names box, where it says about marriage by banns/licence etc, both the dash after 'by' and the cross through of the word 'or' are both also as if left handed.

In any case, William should have died between 1851 and 1861 and I still can't find him!

Matilda was admitted to the Castle St workhouse in Westminster 17 Oct 1855, having been removed from St Luke's parish by an order made 15 Sept 1855. She was discharged the same day.

I wonder if this was after the death of William?

At first this one seems too young, but your William said he was 52 in 1851, so had possibly lost some years:

ELM, WILLIAM

St Luke's, where Matilda was removed from....

Well I've found Matilda died in 1869 in the Workhouse(St Luke's). But her death doesn't come up in registers, so they've probably mangled that too. The death for William looks promising.

I knew that workhouse wasn't situated where you might expect, but coudn't remember where it was, so I looked for the death registrations of the other people who died 22/23 Feb (same workhouse page as Matilda) which led me to Shoreditch district.... Then it was easy!

Two attempts at indexing on FreeBMD:

Deaths Mar 1869

Ehu Matilda 64 Shoreditch 1c 105
Elm Matilda 64 Shoreditch 1c 105

The index pages attached to FreeBMD show the entry was originally indexed twice by the GRO, but the new GRO search facility only has the entry as Elm (as far as I could see, anyway!):

ELM, MATILDA
64
GRO Reference: 1869 M Quarter in SHOREDITCH Volume 01C Page 105
