Ths lot are on the 1891 census, so how alive will they be now?

Louisa, Hester, Richard, Ellen, Charles, Robert, Harry, Annie and Fred.

There's also Mary and William who are older and on the 1881 census. Then there's the youngest Edward (on 1901), who would only be 117 now.

Do you think I should push them about this then Merry. I just think they can't be bothered to find the information I want, which is 'why was she in the asylum in the first place'?

It probably depends how much you already know. I would be inclined to give them a list of the siblings with birth and death registrations/dates where you know them and what their ages would be now if you don't. Then if you have the certs for your direct line I would send them photocopies of those. That way you have given them what they want, within reason. If they say they want ALL the death certs you can say that is unreasonable, particularly as a death cert doesn't prove it is for the right (Wright?!!) person.

What they have asked for doesn't include proof you are the NOK, but as OC says, they just have to get something to show they didn't just give you what you were asking for, no questions asked.

Yes, shake a stick at them and I reckon they will back down. It is ridiculous.

Good one Stella.

If you need help finding possible death reg, we will all help I'm sure.

No, I'm not suggesting you buy all of the certs.

Thanks Margaret. I'll start on it tomorrow. If they do want certificates though, I shall complain - it's ridiculous when all I want to know is why she had to be admitted to the asylum.

I've got asylum records for three people from two different UK Record Offices, and never been asked to prove I'm next of kin (I wasn't in one case), so it presumably isn't a statutory requirement.

Really Mary, now that is interesting. Which years did the records cover please? So why are they being so fussy in my case I wonder?

Just because it's you!! lol

I doubt there's any special reason - probably just that the office people don't want to chip their nails rummaging in some cockroach-infested basement, or something.......
