Silly question!
I haven't had an Ancestry sub for some time and have been getting along well enough without it.
However, I know their London resources are really good. Question: Are baptisms for c. 1780 now indexed? I'm asking this because I can't do this week's "TO4GG" because I haven't found a baptism for Edward Cook, OH's 3x great-grandfather.

Yes, they're indexed now. There are several Edward Cooks in that time frame - St Leonards Shoreditch, St James Clerkenwell, St Andrew Holborn and St Botolph Bishopsgate. I'm happy to give more details!

Hi, Sue, Edward Cook Shoreditch sounds right!
He got married at St Pancras but he lived in Stepney and Whitechapel and worked as a coach builder. If you could give me details I'd be really grateful. Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 09-09-11 at 09:38.

OK
St Leonard, Shoreditch Edward s of William and Mary Cook of Hoxton Town. Born Januray 21st, Baptised 12 February 1775. St James, Clerkenwell 1 February 1775 Baptised Edward s of Edward and Dinah Cook. Born 4 January. St Botolph's (a lot of my Shoreditch lot used St Botolph's) Baptised 7 Oct 1774 Edward s of John and Ann St Andrew Holborn ( because it's the nearest date wise!) Edward s of William and Sarah Cook Mount Pleasant baptised 16 May 1779 None of them give a fathers's occupation. Hope it helps in some way! I'll have a look for some marriages ....

Thanks, Sue. None of them jump out at me.
I was hoping against hope that one of them might have the name "Adolphus"!  Edward's first son was Edward Adolphus Cook.

I should say he is likely to be close to 1780 because he was (allegedly) 46 when he was buried in 1826 at St Mary's, Whitechapel.
Of course, he might not have been born in London at all.

I've had a look at some likely marriages in the hope that they had a witness named Adolphus but no joy.
There's no Adolphus Cook coming up anywhere apart from one Edward Adolphus Cook in 1808 which I suspect is yours anyway. Sorry!
