Loved this thread, Phoenix. Hope this intruiging troupe are part of your mate's family tree.

Wonder what happened to Samuel Neale - was the marriage to Lillo/Florence annulled?

I wish they were, Shona!

Best mate has a wonderful victorian photograph album. Unfortunately, she allowed a friend to remove all the photos, so we do not know what order they were originally. This might have given us clues, however small.

It was supposed to have been her granny's album but we think she was just an ag lab's daughter from Sussex (won't know for certain until - we hope! - 2022)

There are two carte de visites. One shows them in sailor suits, the other in kilts, according to bm. I don't remember full details, but did think them gaudily overdressed.

Another photograph was of a similar vintage, clearly a wedding photo. We assumed it was one of the Lanning girls, but the studio was German.......

Turns out it was a wedding.... of one of Queen V's grandchildren. I found the identical image on the internet.

Hildros Dillon appears on the London e rolls until 1949 and there is a Hilda B Dillon death registration Apr-Jun 1950 Middlesex South, age 77. So maybe Hildros's real name was Hilda, or maybe the GRO made a mistake. (Or maybe it's not her death registration!)

Ooh look, we're famous: http://www.19thcenturyphotos.com/Lil...spa-126784.htm

And the article shows one of the carte de visites that Best Mate owns.

(I'd forgotten just how much work Merry and Kite had done on this, nor the wonderful images Shona had found.)

One of the newspaper articles (and there are way more and when I last looked) commented bitterly that the names were clearly desgined to confuse the audience as to the sex of the children.

Indeed they could, Kite, since they seem to have used most of your research.
