Walter was born in Brighton on 24 Oct 1897 to Albert and Emily Figg, in 1901 they lived in Woodham Ferrers in Essex, but between then and 1911 the family moved to Haywards Heath. In 1911 they were at 14 Western Road, his father was a hotel barman, while Walter George at just 13 was an errand boy for a coal merchant, and the eldest of 8 children.

Walter enlisted on 27 Oct 1915 and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 12 July 1916. He was killed in action at Ypres on 22 Oct 1917. He has no known grave, but is commemorated there on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
