He also has a son William aged 4 on the 1851 census, Nell (at Ystradyfodwg). William's birthplace is also just shown as Glamorgan. Presumably Mary can't be William's mother?

This looks like him in 1861:
1861 census on ancestry

Pontwally, Ystraddyfodwg, Glamorgan
William Thomas Head Mar 26 Iron Miner Pembroke Witson(?)
Elizabeth Do Wife Mar 24 Glamorgan Rhigos
Mary Do daur 5 Do Do
Elizabeth Do Do 4 Do Do
Ann Do Do 2 Do Do
Griffith Llowyd Father in Law Widower 76 Formerly farm labourer Do Docalalas(?)
William Williams Grandson 14 Iron Miner Do Rhigos

I presume that William Williams isn't William Thomas's grandson! He could be the same William who was Griffith's "son" on the 1851.

I have no idea what Docalalas is supposed to be! Hopefully people who know more about Wales might have an idea?

Likely death registration for Griffith - Jul-Sep 1865 Merthyr T registration district. This is before age at death was added to the index.

There is a baptism for a Griffith Lloyd 9 Oct 1785 at Laleston, Glamorgan, parents Griffith and Anne. I don't know whether that's in the right area? The father's occupation is butcher.

The baptism looks good, Laleston is the right sort of area (west of Bridgend).

Any idea what that birthplace on the 1861 census is supposed to say, Nell?

Nope! It does look like Docalalas. But it isn't anything ringing any bells and of course spelling Griffith's surname as Llowyd doesn't inspire confidence in the enumerator!
