I think this might be his birth, Sylvia:

September qr 1843
GRATTON Male Bakewell 19 350

Bonsall is in the Bakewell district.

Edit: I have viewed the original page on FMP and the numbers aren't at all clear, so you would have to check if you ordered the certificate. The page is free to view on FMP as the quality is so poor.

In 1911 Napier Gratton is with his wife Emma and sons George, Earnest Walter and Frederick in Derby. He has been married for 34 years.

Thank you Elizabeth, have just looked on Ancestry and the birth image is not clear either, but there is a female birth just underneath with page number 351, could there have been twins ?

Will check on deaths and send for that cert.

Perhaps neither of them was expected to survive, so they were registered quickly.

Will have to see if the birth cert is the right one and gives an indication of a twin.

I would imagine Napier is the correct spelling (if there is such a thing as a correct spelling) There is a Napier St in Burton on Trent, after a Lord Napier I believe. He was either at Trafalgar or Waterloo, haven't checked. They tended to name people after events and people.
