Over 1,000,000 records, with names of proprietors and tenants, so worth a look. Let us know if you find someone! |

I've found one of my Joshua Websters in Sunbury. He's renting from a Thos Long and paid 8s (assuming I'm understanding this correctly!) Sadly he could be one of two Joshuas - one my 4x gt grandfather and the other his uncle and I've no way of telling which it was.

I've found my 5xg-grandfather Robert Bristow at Union Court, St John's, Surrey. There are some strange transcriptions of place names - Warrier, Surrey, when it clearly says Mitcham on the image, for instance, and "Bletchingley in the send counby of Surrey"!

I'm puzzled about the name it gives to the parish of Quorndon in Leicestershire: "Quorndon and Welliss". There's no place nearby with a similar name, and googling turns up absolutely nothing. I checked the index at the beginning of the book, and it's spelled the same. Anyone know what it might mean?
In another parish I found someone with the delightful name of Winter Darker (not a mistranscription). |

Hmph, for the parish of Worksop in Nottinghamshire all the occupiers are just listed as "Tenants" with no names given! On the images, I mean, not a transcription error.
I can't find anything to explain Quorndon and Welliss either, Mary, sorry. |

When I think of the hours we spent on transcribing *sigh*
What is in the TNA is useful, but the information in the local record offices is much more helpful, as you can build up a picture over time. Land Tax Records are my favourites for chasing obscure ancestors, particularly those who fall on hard times, or have the same names as cousins.

Can anyone find Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, please? I've found the Hundred of East Flegg in volume 2 but it doesn't include Yarmouth in the list of places at the front of the volume.

Yarmouth, Lynn and Norwich are usually treated separately from the hundreds. Have you looked in Volume 3? (From memory, there were 3 vols for the county)

Thanks for the suggestion, Phoenix.
Volume 1 = Group 1 R, class 23, piece 59, and contains Hundreds Blofield, Brotheross, Clackclose, Clavering, Depwade, Diss, Earsham, Erpingham North, Erphingham South, Eynsford. Volume 2, piece 60 - Hundreds Flegg East, Flegg West, Forehoe, Freebridge Lynn, Freebridge Marshland, Gallow, Greenhoe North, Greenhoe South, Grimshoe, Guiltcross, Henstead, Shropham. Volume 3, piece 61 - Hundreds Happing, Holt, Humbleyard, Launditch, Loddon, Mitford, Smithdon, Taverham, Tunstead, Walsham, Wayland. Then there is a separate volume for the City of Norwich, piece 62. And aha! On the contents page for that one, it also lists the Boroughs of King's Lynn, Thetford, and Great Yarmouth. Great Yarmouth is supposed to start at folio 290, but that's where the images finish. If I ask ancestry about it, I wonder whether they will have a clue what I'm talking about, lol. |
