Default 1939 Register Q

Can a closed entry be opened by a living individual if it is their own entry?

Someone I know, born in 1918, has their own entry open on FMP but closed on Ancestry.

Or is it that FMP have caught up with opening the records of people as they turn 100. This lady's birthday was in March this year, so not long ago.

I don't think a living person can ask to have their record opened to the public, but FMP will have opened it automatically when she turned 100.

She can ask to have it closed if she likes, though.

Yes, I had to do that for mum as her entry was opened in error.

Another thing..... will ancestry be opening more entries too, as people pass the 100 mark?

I don't think ancestry have access to the closed records, so they can only open records when the updated images are passed on to them by TNA / FMP. This will probably happen annually or something like that.

From Ancestry's 'About 1939 England and Wales Register'

Redactions

Images have been redacted to protect the privacy of those still alive and we will be annually adding records for those with birth dates older than 100 years or if a record of the death has been reported to The National Archives. Images will also be updated to reflect the opening of the record. All indexes have been created from redacted images as provided by The National Archives and as such, some indexes may not include all information as originally recorded, where it is obscured from view.
