Default Not sure this can be solved but...

I have Elizabeth Carnell marrying in Branscombe, Devon in 1754, a sojourner in the parish. She stays there and has 10 children and is recorded as being 84 when she's buried in 1815.

There seem to be three candidates for a baptism, using FMP and FS - Elizabeth Carnal 1729 Halberton, Elizabeth Carnell 1731 Kingsteignton and Betty Carnal 1735 Feniton - but the latter two both seem to marry in their parish.

The Halberton Elizabeth was daughter of Prudence. There are burials at Halberton for Elizabeths in 1732 and 1774, no details. Prudence doesn't seem to marry (and I can't see any baptism or previous marriage for her) and is buried in Halberton in 1765.

Of course, my Elizabeth doesn't have any daughters named Prudence.

Any ideas?

Not a direct answer, but I grew up in East Devon and there were quite a few Carnell families in the area - including Feniton. Mainly farmers. It's a common Devon name.

I'll have a look at FMP, David.

There is one in Payhembury in 1738 - perhaps slightly too late but still possible.

First name(s) Elizabeth
Last name Carnal
Birth year -
Baptism year 1738
Baptism date 23 May 1738
Baptism place Payhembury, St Mary
Father's first name William
County Devon
Archive reference 2974A/PR/1/1
Record set Devon Baptisms
Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records
Record collection Births & baptisms
Collections from Great Britain

I have many memories of Payhembury, where a school friend's father was vicar!

Edit:
Payhembury is just outside Honiton and very close to Feniton.

Do the names of Elizabeth's children give you any clues?

I remember this is your area :-)

I discounted the Payhembury one as too late for a c1731 birth but of course it *could* be. Her children were William, Ann, Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas, William, James and Henry. Her husband was Thomas and in-laws John and Elizabeth. That does lean a little to the 1738 baptism although her brother-in-law was William

Ah, there's an Elizabeth Carnell buried in Payhembury in August 1738 which might be that baptism

So probably not her. The date was probably too late.
I wonder if there are any baptisms not showing up in FMP.

Sorry - distracted by the Archers omnibus. The Halberton one seems possible but until all the parishes are online I can't think too much of it. I am finding, with a lot of Devon families (where I've no doubt of parentage), there's a lot of naming after other relations other than parents/ grandparents.
