Sorry, Lindsay, forgot to say thank you for the burials. They look promising. Off to check them out now...

Lindsay, following up those burials, I have come across this (below) which says that Anthony Wood was buried 7 Apr 1686 at St Matthew Friday Street, which I first thought would rule him out as being my Anthony as he would be living in Bristol by then, but my Anthony's will was proved 8 Apr 1686! And it was written on the 24th Mar 1685, so surely it must be him! The will doesn't specify where he should be buried.

Now it seems I need to look at Boyd's Residents of London...

On the assumption that either Anthony's father or Joan's father was called Humphrey, since they gave two sons that name, I had a look at the will of a Humphrey Chambers from 1663 and he mentions his son in law Mr Anthony Wood!
PCC wills

He is a Doctor of Divinity, and Ancestry have indexed his residence as "Penffey, Kent", but TNA says Pewsey, Wiltshire. I would never have thought of looking there!

Edit - he has a son in law Mr John Smith, and a granddaughter Sarah Strange, so hopefully John Smith is the husband of Mrs Ann Smyth, and Sarah Strange will turn out to marry Jonathan Buttall to tie up a few loose ends! The will was written on the 31st Aug 1662 and says that the Woods had three children at that time, so I suppose that would be Ann, Mary and the first Elizabeth.

This must be him and it says he was the rector of Pewsey:

Seems odd that his daughter became a Baptist?

Oooh, here is his biography:

Looks very useful!

A big thank you to Lindsay and Shona! I should maybe rename this thread now as it looks as though I now have half of the solution - Joan's half of the tree. Hopefully I can now figure out who some of the people mentioned in her will are, and then those who are left should be Anthony's relatives.

I've found the marriage of John Smith and Anne Chambers in the Wiltshire Marriage Index on ancestry - John Smith of Christopher's parish in London married Anne Chambers 8 Dec 1647 at Pewsey.
