Default 1851 please.

A contact has sent me some information but I have found a few holes I would like plugged!

I am trying to check the age of Ralph Shorrock. In 1841, he is 40, an engineer, of Union St, Darwen, Lancs, with wife Alice (45) and a load of children, youngest Ralph aged 2.

I would like to know what age he declares in 1851, because I have a baptism for him in 1804 which would make him only 14 at marriage. Possible but unlikely I feel.

Thanks in advance.

It seems to me that you are only interested in the Ralph Shorrock who is the son of Ellen Holden. Any other Ralphs are of no consequence. Is that right?

The family you have in 1841 would definitely appear to be the children of Alice Entwhistle and Ralph Shorrock who married in 1818, so I think that Ralph can't be yours - never minding what age he said he was on the census.

I think the Ralph that Asa found (who was single) may be the child of John and Peggy Shorrock (listed as Showers in 1841).

Merry

I'm gobsmacked - how do you know I am only interested in Ralph, son of Ellen Holden and James Shorrock??!!!

In 1841, the Shorrocks in Union St have son Ralkph aged 2. his mother's maiden name is Entwistle according to Lancsbmd, so it seems correct that this family is the Ralph Shorrock/Alice Entwistle marriage.

But yes, you are right, I don't feel this is MY Ralph Shorrock, son of James Shorrock and Ellen Holden. I further feel uneasy because this family has not followed the naming pattern - there ought to be an Esther and a Rachel and a Timothy in there, if they are descended from Ellen Holden!

Lol I looked at the 1804 baptism and the name Holden had a beacon of light round it!!

Actually, there are surprisingly quite a few Ralph Shorrock burials on the pilot site.

Why is the forename Ralph so popular in Lancs and other more northern counties, but not so much down south?

Either of those could be, thankyou Merry. Ralph was definitely from a noncon family.

Merry

the name Ralph (in Darwen and surrounds) stems from Ralph Holden, Lord of the Manor. Ralph was a first-son name in the Holdens from about 1100 onwards.
