John McKenzie
I have struggled for many years with this brick wall and hope you can help.
I have John McKenzie/Mackenzie/McKursey b c1819- 1821 born Kendal or Standish in Westmoreland according to the census's and died in North Shields in 1884. I have him in census's except 1841 - he married Hannah Brown from Berwick on Tweed and they had their first child in Berwick in November 1945. I haven't found a marriage except possibly in Glasgow nor Hannah in 1841 census. Hannah was RC. 1851 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...55&usePUB=true 1861 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...55&usePUB=true 1871 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...55&usePUB=true 1881 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...55&usePUB=true I haven't found anything for him in Kendal, Standish or Westmoreland. Now ancestry hints have come up with - Could it be him? or am I clutching at straws? There is this baptism in Berwick on Tweed around the right date https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...55&usePUB=true This is a 1841 census https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...55&usePUB=true

You would need something to prove it. Sorry but it seems pretty tenuous to me at the moment. I don't think all the Westmorland PR's are online yet, are they?

There is a John McKenzie / Ann Brown marriage 19 Dec 1844 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, according to FMP. Is that the Glasgow one you mentioned? FamilySearch lists children of that couple born at Greenock so they won't be your couple.

The John McKenzie in the Ancestry hint, and who you found on the 1841 census, married Jane Gibson 26 Feb 1840 at Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland.

Thanks Kate
Yes that was the marriage I found in Greenock but as Berwick is a border town I wonder if they married across the border as a irregular marriage but then Hannah comes from an RC family. Iirc Haggeston Castle has some of the family records. I also saw the marriage for Jane Gibson and wondered whether she'd died or he'd left her if that was indeed the right John McKenzie. I've never had much success with Berwick on Tweed's records I did wonder at one stage whether he'd been born when his family were at the Appleby Horse Trials and wasn't actually from there.
