Are Rufus and Harriet the couple in Camberwell in 1911, with Rufus age 57 born Croydon, Surrey, and Harriet age 62 born Mile End London (according to the index)?

Ahh, that sounds interesting! I don't have access to the 1911 census, so I haven't seen it, but it sounds right. Rufus would have been the right age, though he was born in Cranleigh, Surrey. Harriet's details are on the money though, judging by the somewhat consistent way she lied about her age in earlier censuses! In the 1901 census she claimed to be 49 (she was really 68, somewhat stretching credulity!!!)

I haven't got access to the 1911 census either, Babel - I just looked at the free searches on the 1911 census site and on Genes Reunited.

Well, either Rufus or Harriet is lying on the 1911 census form because someone has entered that they have been married for 35 years! (struck through) He is a railway labourer. They have a boarder with them.

Fascinating! Thank you Elizabeth, Can you discern the name of the boarder?

Babel, the boarder is

Edwin Dettmer Widower M 78 1833 Butcher Paddington London

Harriet says she is 62 and Rufus says he is 57.

Thank you for that Elizabeth. I was half hoping, of course, that it would be a name that meant something to me, but alas it's not. She does seem a funny old thing, that Harriet. Lying about her father on the marriage register, lying (quite astoundingly) in the censuses. She must have looked pretty good for a 78-year-old to be able to pass herself off as 62, though I suppose no-one but the enumerator would see the return anyway!

It means that the age on Harriet's death registration could be way out, of course.
