Default Surrey Records - ancestry

Surrey Land Tax Records 1780-1832
Surrey Jury-Qualified Freeholders and Copyholders 1696-1824
Surrey Licensed Victuallers 1785-1903

These include parts of Surrey which are now in London.

I'm sure that the Freeholders and Copyholders and the Licensed Victuallers (but not the Land Tax Records) were indexed by the World Archives Project, but it doesn't seem to say so in the information about these databases. So it should let you view the transcriptions for those two databases even if you don't have a paid sub. Please let me know if it doesn't do this and I will ask WAP what's going on.

Thanks, Kite!!

How I wish my Surrey ancestors weren't impoverished ag labs. Indexes to Land Tax have been available for years, so I knew they weren't there, but there doesn't appear to be a single freeholder or LV either.

Ooh, lots of mine in the Land Tax Records. And one or two in the freeholders.

I am finding a lot of Land Tax Record entries where the transcriber has given a title of Sir to the occupier instead of the owner!

I've found the names of several ancestors on these indexes, which is great but I knew that they lived in those places or were Licensed Victuallers. Are there further, more detailed records at an Archive somewhere? Talking about Lambeth and surrounding area mainly and a few in Mitcham.

What kind of records in particular are you after, Sue?

Sorry, perhaps I didn't make myself very clear. I wondered if the Land Tax index and the Licensed Victuallers index led to further records related to those indices. Or were they just lists produced to show that each person on the list had paid the relevant money?

Oh, I see. These aren't indexes, but the actual registers.

Thanks Kite. I was hoping that there might be more information leading from these new records but just clutching at straws as usual!
