23.1.1850 John Purvey joined 61st regiment of foot (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot ] at Cheltenham .[private 2578]

1851 - not yet traced, but presumably with the army. 61st regiment seemed to be in India from 1849-57.

8 July 1851 discharged unfit on following purulent opthalmia which caused the loss of sight in his right eye. He had previously been a labourer and received £4 on joining. Opthalmia was very prevelant in the British army.
