Default Updating the register

Just done my first search of the 1939 Register, for my grandmother. The search results came up with her birth name - and married name in brackets. That's odd, I thought - she didn't marry until 1946, so how did anyone know that in 1939? Looked at the original image, and found someone had amended the name, dated 2.12.46. If this was usual, I pity the poor soul who had to trawl through the register looking for the entry to update every time someone got married!

Michael

The 1939 register was used as the base for the NHS register (the Central Register) in 1948 and it was continuously updated until 1991 with births, marriages and deaths.
