Default Someone from Wales

The only information I have on my FMFMM is that she married David Lewis and died sometime between 1861 and 1871; first name, maiden surname, date and place of birth, date and place of marriage - not a clue!

This is FMFF and FMFM's marriage:

Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Ystradgynlais in the Country of Brecknock, 15th December 1878

William Hughes, 21, bachelor, collier [can't read the residence]; father Thomas Hughes, mason
Ann Lewis, 21, spinster, residence Cwmgiedd; father David Lewis, collier

Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, after Banns, by me, ELD Glanby, Rector.

This marriage was solemnized between us, {William Hughes, Ann Lewis}, in the presence of us, {Thomas Morris, Thomas Williams}.

FMFF and family in 1881, with FMFMF living with them:

Cwmgiedd, Ystradgynlais, Pontardawe, RG 11/5346

William Hughes, head, married, 23, furnace filler, b Cardiganshire
Anne Hughes, wife, married, 23, b Breconshire
Thomas Hughes, son, 1 week, b Ystradgynlais Breconshire
David Lewis, widower, father[-in-law], 73, b Glamorganshire
William Gallop, boarder, 40, b Devonshire
Eleanor Rees, servant, 18, b Ystradgynlais Breconshire

Probable FMFMF in 1871:

Cwmgiedd, Ystradgynlais, RG10/5434

David Lewis, head, widower, 59, coal miner, b Carmarthen Bettws
Mary Lewis, daughter, unmarried, 20, b Brecknock Ystradgynlais
Hannah Lewis, daughter, 10, scholar, b Brecknock Ystradgynlais

Residence, occupation and the fact that he's a widower all match the 1881 entry, so I'm inclined to think that this is the right person even though the age is a few years out and the birthplace completely different. No sign of Ann in 1871, unless Ann and Hannah are the same person.

If anyone can make anything from that bare minimum of information, I'll not only be very grateful but also very impressed!

1851?

HO107; Piece: 2464; Folio: 43; Page: 38

David Lewis head m 36 collier b Llangafelach, Glamorgan
Margaret Lewis wife m 33 b Kilbebyll, Glamorgan
Evan Lewis son 9 b Ystradgynlais, Breconshire
Margaret Lewis ddau 6 b ditto
Jennet Lewis dau 4 b ditto
Lewis Lewis son 2 b ditto
Mary Lewis dau 4 months b ditto

In 1861 Hannah is likely to be this one:

RG9; Piece: 4089; Folio: 89; Page: 3

boarding with a family called Powell. She is aged 4 months - there are three possible birth regs - one in Q4 1860 and two in the following Q. I'm thinking perhaps her mum died in childbirth or soon after which led to her bing fostered (there are lots of Margaret Lewis deaths though ).

There's a possible for Mary (aged 11) in 1861, but she is a servant, not with her dad. No sign of Lewis Lewis or Jennet, or dad, David!!

This is rather fanciful, but there is a family in Lower Ystradgynlais in 1841 headed by Lewis Lewis, 60, publican, and Ann 55, with sons including David 25, miner, and with a Margaret Davis, 20, FS, born out of county. But David is born in county. Anyway, I'm just wondering whether that's David and Margaret before their marriage. Can't see a marriage though!

Thanks for all that - David seems to have changed his birthplace on practically every census so I wouldn't bet against the 1841 entry being him.

Hannah's birth cert has just come (b 3rd December 1860, Cwmgiedd, Ystradgynlais), which gives Margaret's maiden name as Leyshon. At least that should be a bit easier to research!

There is a Margaret Lision baptised 30 May 1818 at Cilybebyll, Glamorgan, with parents Evan and Jennet. (Google suggested I might mean Cilybebyll when I searched for Kilbebyll.) FamilySearch doesn't treat Lision as a variant of Leyshon so it took a bit of messing about to find that! (First I found Mary Leision baptised 5 Feb 1821 and then looked for a Margaret with the same parents' first names.) Looks good but of course you should get that marriage certificate mentioned in my previous post to check.
