Three Weddings and Four People
I have been trying to make some sense of my tree
There are 4 people:-Henry, Mary, Clarence and Caroline. In 1915, Henry married Mary in a Unitarian "Church and Hall", by certificate In Aug 1918, Caroline married Clarence in a Parish Church, by licence (Clarence may never have existed - but that's another story! ) In Dec 1918, Henry married Caroline in a Presbyterian church, by certificate (this marriage may well have been bigamous) Maybe I am looking for problems where none exist! - but the different types of venue are making me dizzy And are all Unitarian and Presbyterian weddings held "by certificate"? Thanks Last edited by Muggins in Sussex; 07-11-09 at 15:02. |

Shouldn't the Aug 1918 bit say "Caroline married Clarence"?

Marriage by certificate is the non-conformist version of marriage by banns in an Anglican church. It meant that the bride and groom gave 3 weeks' notice of their intention to marry.

The notices of intention to marry would be pinned on the noticeboard in the regster office for the three weeks between the issue of the registrars cert and the wedding. I doubt many people actually go and view these, so these weddings might well go unnoticed by the general public.
Erm............Do you have Mary's death cert? (assuming that is her in 1918) I am just nosy and wondered what happened to her.......

Hi Merry and thanks
Yes, I do have Mary's death cert - she died on 28th May 1918 of Pulmary Tuberculosis. Sadly, Mary and Henry's baby died the year before. |

Oooh, that's sad.
I don't know why, but I had imagined her death would be something suspicious!

LOL Merry!
The death cert says, "no p.m. 1 year" I presume pm = post mortem - does anyone know what "no p.m. 1 year" means ? Thanks Last edited by Muggins in Sussex; 08-11-09 at 08:46. |

I would assume it means - No post mortem necessary whatever she died of she had for 1 year.
