Default Can anyone solve this child problem?

research for a friend so no updates to BK6

I think I've posted this before elsewhere, but am having another go......

Louisa Moran married Edward Varney in Feb 1871 at St Mary's Newington.

1871 no children

1881 children:
Edwin 9
Mary Betsy 8
William J 5
Eli George 3

1891 children:

Edwin and Eli as above, plus:
Grace Maud 7
Daisy 5

Up to there all is straightforward......

1901 children:

Grace 18 and Daisy 15 as above, plus:

Violet 4

The only birth reg which fits this Violet is this one:

Births Mar 1897
Varney Violet Gladys W. Ham 4a 28

But this is what's on the 1911:

Edward Varney was in an institution and died soon after the census.

Louisa wrote that she had been married 40 years (correct) and that she had four children, all living.

Then there are four daughters listed, so I would presume she misunderstood the question. However, these are the details given:

Daisy Varney 20 (she should be 25 according to both prev censuses, but I can't find a birth reg for her - should be West Ham - born Stratford, Essex on all censuses.)

May Varney 18 (don't know who this is, but a great-niece of this family remembers a great-auntie May, but unfortunately she has another great-auntie May and she doesn't know who she remembers, if that makes sense!)

Violet Varney 16 (is this Violet Gladys?)

Gladys Varney 14 (or is this Violet Gladys?)

So is she in a complete muddle or have I missed something? I can't find a death or a marriage for Violet Gladys Varney

Did Louisa fill the form in herself?

It's not easy to tell. I'd say possibly not. The enumerators initials in the bottom left corner look like the handwriting too!

I've just had a thought. If Violet and Gladys are the same person because Louisa was tricky to understand, then might Daisy and May be the same person too? I saw this marriage....

They could be. There are too many Varneys in West Ham!

The army record for Edward Frank Hitch gives his wife's name as Daisy Mary(?) Louisa Varney - the Mary is the unclear bit!!

I was just about to look at his service papers when I saw you already had! If you compare her middle name with the name of the month when they got married, it looks as though her name has an extra stroke in it, so I would say Mary.

That's weird, though, it looks like Mary on one copy of the papers and May on the other! Sorry, I don't know which one you were linking to as I already had them open in a different browser so I didn't click on your link.

His address on image 483 (Protection Certificate and Certificate of Identity) is 24 Bristol Road, Stratford. Were the Varneys ever at that address?

*gets out crystal ball* I don't know! I don't see why they should have been?

It would make sense that she's got the name Louisa after her mum though.

Which reminds me - I don't think Louisa has died yet!! She was born in Q3 1851.
