The only thing I can think of is that his name could be Joseph Finnerty, and that when you say it all together, it isn't obvious that there are two "f" sounds - one at the end of Joseph and one at the beginning of "Finnerty", so you could hear it as Joseph (H)innerty?
Unfortunately I can't find a Joseph Finnerty who was born or died in Worksop.

Assuming the great-grandfather you mention is Joseph Wilson b 1880 who you said previously settled in Worksop, you might like to double check your dates for Joe, as you said on an earlier thread that Joseph Wilson died in his early 40s (though we coudn't find the death entry) so it would be rather unlikely his best friend was someone who died ten years ago unless the friend died at a very great age. Just a thought........
