Edith is a real brickwall, I have been unable to locate her birth & she is given as Adelaide in 1881 which was confusing. She disappears sometime after the birth of her last child in 1922 & is shown as being dead by 1943 on her son's death cert. My fil knows nothing about her although he does remember his grandfather & also Edith's sister.

There is a likely birth registration for Edith's sister Elizabeth:

Elizabeth Shaw Sep 1889 Mt Drayton 6a 721.

If you get that birth certificate (assuming it's the right one) it will give you Mary A's maiden name which should help.

The problem with that is that it wouldn't prove that Mary A is Edith's mother, as well as Elizabeth's

No, but then you would be able to look for Thomas and Mary A's marriage and find out if they married before or after the approx date of Edith's birth, and if it was well before Edith was born, you wouldn't be looking for a previous relationship for either Thomas or Mary A, but if they married after Edith was born, you would be able to look to see if she was registered under Mary A's previous surname.

I have found a possible marriage to a Mary Bowler in Sept qtr 1888, but had not been able to find Edith under that name either. I wish I had tried ordering a cert before the prices went up.
