Not sure it's really any help. It looks as if William/Charles was an itinerant worker, moving round the country and leaving abandoned families in his wake. The odds are that the mother(s) formed relationships with other men and the children grew up with step-fathers' surnames in censuses.

I've been trying to find William / Charles on other censuses but no luck yet.

Nor me. But if he were escaping his wives, he might have used aliases. Or he could have been a mariner, though he never says so.

There is a William Wood baptism 1823 at Kirton in Lindsey, though, and William Woodthorpe was baptised in 1815 at Kirton in Holland.

John junior joined the merchant navy. No next of kin, but there is a photo of him on fmp: born Guisborough 6 January 1884.
