Default Thomas Harwood or Chandler (OH's FFFFF)

Name - "official" name and what they were known as
Thomas Harwood or Chandler (his mother married Thomas Chandler in 1810 and he used either surname)

Date and place of birth
c1808 Sutton, Sussex

Names of parents
Sarah Harwood & probably Thomas Chandler (see note re burial)

Date and place of baptism - if applicable
26 June 1803, Sutton, Sussex son of Sarah Harwood (unmarried)

1838 Sutton, Sussex to Mary Curtis

Ag Lab

All his life in Sutton, Sussex though going by the name of Harwood in 1841 and Chandler thereafter.

March 1882 Sutton (death registered as Chandler)

Date and place of burial
09 Mar 1882 Sutton, Sussex under the name of Chandler with the following spiteful but useful note by the vicar “The Name Chandler was inadvertently inserted here being the name by which the person in question was known in the Parish and Neighbourhood but being born out of Wedlock of a woman named Harwood afterwards married to the father. Reaffirmed went by the name of Chandler.”

What a nasty but pedantic man - I guess he would have said the same about my great-great grandma, Thomas' first cousin, Catherine Tupper Harwood, who was born 6 weeks before her parents were married.

Wish that all vicars were so thorough in the record-keeping !

I can really visualise the vicar finding this out and sitting down to write his little message! I bet he thought all those who came across it would be very shocked!!!
