There is a John Bowskill baptised 17 May 1714 at Headon, Nottinghamshire, son of John and Dorothy, but I had ruled him out because on FamilySearch it shows that he died 11 Mar 1715. But FreeREG has the burial as 11 Mar 1713/4 and the baptism as 17 May 1714, which would mean that the burial was an earlier child if correct. But it has John and Dorothy's marriage as 15 Jun 1712 with a son Samuel baptised 27 Jul 1712, and no son John baptism apart from the 1714 one. So it is probably FamilySearch which is correct, but I will go and check it at the archives to make sure.

I went and looked at the PR's at the library, and the burial is 11 Mar 1714/5 so I can rule that John out. Mine is still a mystery man.

Ooh, there's an Allice Boskille, wife of John Boskille, buried at Elkesley 19 Feb 1683/4. could be a relative of my John?

FreeREG has Johannes Bossill, son of Johannis Bossill, baptised 10 Oct 1715 at East Retford, which is very close to Elkesley.

I went and looked at the East Retford PR's at the library and the baptism entry in post #5 is correct but I couldn't find any other reference to the family in the years before and after it, so not much help!

A couple of distant cousin DNA matches are descended from Levi Hurst, baptised 27 Nov 1823 at Eaton, Nottinghamshire, the son of James Hurst and Mary Brooke, nee Bowskill, who married 29 Oct 1816 at Gamston, Notts. Mary Bowskill was baptised 19 Dec 1784 at Gamston, daughter of Thomas and Mary, and she first married Joseph Brooks of Doncaster 13 Jun 1805 at Gamston. Her parents were Thomas Bowskill and Mary Goulding who married 28 Nov 1783 at Gamston. Their other children were John, William, Elizabeth, Thomas, Jane, Ann, and George. Thomas Bowskill was buried at Gamston on the 6 Dec 1831, age 70. So I think he must be the Thomas Bouskin who was baptised 2 Dec 1759 at Eaton, the son of Thomas and Jane. FMP has the marriage of Thomas Bowskin and Jane Taylor 10 Dec 1744 at Laxton, but FreeREG has it as 10 Dec 1753, in which case I should think it would be the right marriage. (Update - it is definitely 1753.)

So, the Thomas who married Jane could be a brother or nephew of my John. If only I could find baptisms for both of them!
