Thanks girls .. you've buried a few and baptised others .. but the Dodgeon are dodging .. There were so many who were Baptist in that area that the only way to find them is through the Census records.
I wonder who Mary Dodgeon was ....
We had a dinner here tonight with some of my bil's friends .. 2 were Kiwi and one from Auckland who knows exactly where Henry Hirst lived .. so such a small world.. my bil was giving it to them lol Cheers. Julie

Elizabeth Dodgeon b c 1822 Todmorden, Yorkshire, as was her mother Mary ? b c 1784. I've been looking at old chat on rootsweb re Todmorden records... I am wondering if they are now available online?

The Lancashire part of Todmorden is covered by Lancashire Online Parish Clerk.

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Todmorden/index.html

I've looked though, but can't see anything obvious for the Dodgeons. Perhaps they were higing in the Yorkshire part of the parish?

In 1835, Todmorden and Walsden were in Rochdale. Prior to 1888, half of Todmorden was in Lancashire with the other half in West Yorkshire.

I was thinking that too because members of my family lived on the border and are hard to trace. Many thanks again Shona. Julie

There are some Todmorden records here, but it isn't comprehensive by any means:

Thanks Mary I couldn't find them. I think that a visit to Lancashire/Yorkshire may be the only way to hopefully sort Todmorden records. Maybe Manchester Library might be helpful.

I am trying to establish when and where John and Mary Hirst died.
Data: Some Family trees have James Hirst born 18/12/1855, Eaves, Burnley, Lancashire, parents Henry Hirst and Elizabeth Dodgeon. Shortly after Henry, Elizabeth and family moved to New Zealand

GF found
1. James Hirst birth registration 1856: Burnley sub-district, mother's maiden name Dodgeon.
2. Burial for the mother of Elizabeth Hirst (nee Dodgeon).
13 Aug 1852 Holy Trinity, Habergham Eaves, Lanc
Mary Dodgson - Age: 68 yrs - Abode: Todmorden

3. 1851 Census Habergham Eaves
Henry Hirst, head, 25, cotton warper, born Padiham
Elizabeth Hirst, wife, 29, milliner, born Todmorden, Yorkshire
Mary Dodgeon, mother-in-law, 67, born Todmorden, Yorkshire.

+Marriage: 28 Dec 1795 St Leonard, Padiham, Lancashire
John Hurst - this Parish - Mary Whittaker - this Parish
Their children born Padiham 1796 to 1814. Only Mathew, Maria and Samuel survive to adulthood. Samuel and family lived Standish St. Burnley. Mathew died 1869 in Padiham.

Burials of John and Mary!! – Did they die in Padiham or Habergham Eaves or elsewhere?

1. Established they lived at Padiham up to 1814.
2. Grandchild Henry & family in Hab Eaves in 1851

Burial: 2 Jun 1816 St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England
John Hirst - Age: 50. (born abt 1766 – m 1795 – 29 at marriage??)
Abode: Lane Bridge in Habergham Eaves

Burial: 5 Feb 1818 St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England
John Hirst - Age: 5. Abode: Lane Bridge in Habergham Eaves (father is not named)

Burial: 29 Oct 1829 St Leonard, Padiham, Lancashire, England
John Hirst - Died: 26 Oct 1829. Age: 70 yrs. (born abt 1759 – m 1795+ – 36 at marriage??)
Abode: Padiham. Cause of Death: Old Age

Burial: 6 Feb 1850 St Peter, Burnley, Lancashire, England
Mary Hirst - Age: 72 (born abt 1778 – m 1795 – 17 at marriage)
Abode: Gannow Hab. Eaves.

I am wondering if anyone can locate Hirsts in 1841 Census at Hab Eaves .. also Mathew Hirst at Padiham (died 1869). Where was Mary? Julie

Not sure if/how they fit in, Julie, but there are a Henry (11) and a Michael (10) Hirst at some type of mission school in Burnley on the 1841. Had been mistranscribed as Hust.
mission school 1841 Burnley

EDIT:
The name of the Greenall family associated with that school is also mistranscribed (as 'Greenwall'). I ran a search with
"Thomas Greenall" Burnley congregational minister
and found a lot of interesting hits for background. Thomas Greenall is described as an independent minister in a report on Burnley, Sunday 15 February 1846, in the Wesleyan Methodist Association magazine. Haven't found any other Hirsts associated with the Greenalls though and not sure if this Henry and Michael are yours.

Many thanks Janet .. I wrote a thread and then lost it!!

Hirsts for four gens were strict Wesleyan/Rechabites .. James' will left three sons 1/- and he was wealthy, quite possibly because they drank moderately.

Great info on Mathew .. didn't they mistranscribe the name..

Found in Lancs OPC:
Marriage: 26 Dec 1819 St Mary, Newchurch in Pendle, Lancashire, England
Matthew Hurst - Weaver, this Chapelry, Isabella Walkden - (X), Spinster, this Chapelry
Witness: Jno Dale; James Bowker, Married by Banns by: J Whitaker Incumbent

Strangely only one baptism – maybe the Methodist records haven’t survived? Nancy was ill?
Baptism: 28 Mar 1824 St Mary, Newchurch In Pendle, Lancashire, England
Nancy Hurst - Daughter of Matthew Hurst & Isabella, Born: 12 Jan 1824
Abode: Haddens Head, Occupation: Weaver, Baptised by: J Whitaker,

Burial: 7 Aug 1872 St Leonard, Padiham, Lancashire, England
Isabella Hirst - Widow of Matthew Hirst, Age: 72 yrs. Abode: Padiham
Grave: II/8/7, Buried by: M. Greenwood, Asst. Curate (same grave as Mathew)
