Benrymnd, I think you must be looking on the MyHeritage site in their
Ellis Island and Other New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 collection. Is that right?

Toward the top of that page, at the end of the paragraph ending 'and Ellis Island (1892-1957)', there is a little down-arrow, and clicking that will bring up some additional text to explain that:
Depending on the year, information recorded about a passenger may include name, age, gender, occupation, destination, and information regarding place of origin—e.g. native country, citizenship status, race, nationality, birthplace, or last residence.
Does that answer your question about their use of the term 'origin'?
