Occupation of William Estall?

It's the top entry on the right-hand side. I was wondering if it is Carpenter abbreviated. Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 20-05-19 at 08:17. |

I think it is Carpenter, there are a few carpenters down the page.
It is weird you can see someone's hand on the scan! |

It's very disconcerting, Maggie! The person has very pronounced age spots or freckles!
Thanks for confirming. I have finally discovered that this branch of OH's family changed their name (or the vicar did it for them!) from Eskdale to Estill! |

There is an excellent book by (I think) George Redmonds, describing how Yorkshire names changed and morphed into other names.

That must be an interesting read, Phoenix.
I have marriages for this family where the bride/groom signs as Estill but the vicar records them as Eskdale. |
