James Gilchrist Wilson's occupation is Literary Editor on his son Edmund's baptism in 1862, if that's any help. (in the LMA records on ancestry)

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec?h...c=&pid=2860429

In St Luke where Susan was b 10 years later!

I see he was a Weslyan Minister and I spent ages trying to find the London childrens births in the LMA records

We really need to know who Robert Fisher's parents were, don't we?

It occurred to me at 3.15am that (ignoring whether Susan is related to Alice Wilson) if Susan Wilson is supposed to be a maiden aunt of Robert Fisher, then given that her name isn't Fisher, I think it should be Potter, as.....

mother's father's mother's father's mother =

Female Fisher, Robert Fisher, female Potter, male Potter, Alice Wilson

So unless it's not an absolutely exact straight line between Robert and Alice Wilson etc and everyone married before having children, then if there is a relationship between Robert and his 'aunt' it probably isn't aunt!

I've looked at Potter/Fisher marriages and Fisher deaths in York but you would have to be very lucky to hit the right ones, so will wait to see if Alison needs any more help.

For what it's worth, Robert's parents were George Fisher and Margaret Ann Potter who married in 1893 (from an old Ancestry tree).

I guess Margaret goes straight back to Alice Wilson and given that Wilson is a common enough surname there could be some other connection between the Fisher/Potter families and the Gilchrist Wilsons. Or, could it be that Robert was adopted by an unconnected lady, but because it was known the name Wilson was in the family the story came about that they were related?

Margaret A Potter is the dau of Robert Potter (shepherd) and his wife, Jane (Robert being the fifth child of Robert Potter senr and Alice Wilson). I didn't get this from the tree as Margaret's parents were not added.

Margaret was quite young when she married as this is her birth and she married in 1893:

Births Sep 1876
Potter Margaret Ann Scarbro' 9d 377

George and Margaret are together in 1901 with several children:

Oh cripes! In 1911 George and Margaret are still together and they have a son called Robert aged 6!!! He was born in Malton (as were all their other children)

This could well be their son:

Births Mar 1905
Fisher Robert Leslie Malton 9d 429

Their younger children are aged 9, 7, 6, 3 and 1

Erm, Alison, do you have your grandfather's birth cert?

*feels a bit drained* lol
