She was already with Kirton on the 1901, as a boarder. Melissa and Willie are Clay, not yet using Kirton.

Marriages Jun 1913
Clay Mary H Kirton Bradford 9b 181
Kirton Thomas A Clay Bradford 9b 181

The banns for the 1913 marriage are ancestry, but not the marriage itself, so I can't see if she said she was a widow - expect so though.

I don't see any children for Thomas and Mary Kirton after 1911

Arthur Clay who in 1891 said he was born in Leeds in 1864ish isn't the same one showing on other censues b 1866 Leeds, father Samuel and wife Alice Ann Green, so at the moment I'm not sure what happened to Arthur.

William Kirton Clay said his father was Thomas Arthur Kirton when he married in 1924 to Agnes Wright, which I'm sure is true, but he didn't drop the name Clay at the wedding.

Still looking for Arthur Clay:

1871 with widowed father James. Arthur b Leeds 1864
1881 no sign of either of them
1891 Arthur with Mary Hannah as already posted, James in an asylum (lunatic)
1901 Arthur vanished, James in a hospital in Leeds, died later in 1901
1911 No sign of Arthur.

When Blanche Clay was married in 1909 she said her father was Arthur Clay, cooper which I think is what he said on his ow marriage cert. She didn't say he was dec'd, but may have thought he was of course......

Hi Janet yes I saw those links. The kids have an initial K, that is Kirton.

Merry I did not find that marriage. Will have to have a look. I did find the Arthur/Alice marriage but I think they are separate people, unless he lied as it would be a bigamous marriage.

I feel Arthur is alive in 1911 as Mary could have said widow instead of married. I was looking for a death but haven't found it so far.

Arthur and Alice are separate people as both Arthurs are on the census at the same time up to 1891.

It might just be that Mary didn't know what happened to Arthur - maybe he emigrated - I don't know why they woud have married in 1913 all of a sudden though, unless it was because they had heard something.....

Head of house is Byron Clay, Arthur's brother. Looking back their father is Frederick, but 'your' Arthur's father is James.

Thanks Merry. I didn't think to look back, doh, I've been trying to find siblings for Arthur (I have 2 girls) or Byron's birth, but no luck. My head isn't thinking clearly.

I'm off to bed now so I'm not ignoring anything, I'll see it in the morning.

As far as I can see your Arthur only had one sister, Bertha, and she died aged 1 in 1866. I can't see a very likely deah for Arthur's mother, but her husband says he's a widower in 1871.
