Betty in 1841?
1841 Census CALLOW, Betty WELLINGTON, Somersetshire HO107 piece 951 folio 8/25 page 11 Address: High Street, Milverton CALLOW, Betty F 50 1791 Somerset Washerwoman CALLOW, William M 20 1821 Somerset Ag. Lab CALLOW, John M 15 1826 Somerset Mason CALLOW, Elizabeth F 15 1826 Somerset CALLOW, Robert M 12 1829 Somerset FMP transcribes them as Callow, and the image clearly shows the surname as Callow – the enumerator obviously couldn’t spell their surname. |

Musgrave - Baghay Farm
I am also researching the Musgraves of Baghay Farm, but James and Mary Musgrave.
In 1841 census, James Musgrave, born 1786, Milverton, was with Mary Cozens (I believe this is Mary Musgrave's niece) and ?? Wm Mosle ?? Mary Musgrave is in 1851 and 1861 census with niece and nephew James and Mary (Cozens) Matthews and their children. Also niece, Charlotte Jane Atkins. Mary Musgrave is a widow at Baghay Farm in 1851. I sure would like to connect James Musgrave with his family. If you have any information to help me do this, I would appreciate it. I do see that Betty Musgrave died Sep 2 1859 in Milverton at the age of 80. Is she your Betty? Regards, Charlene |

Nice to hear from you Charlene. My Betty born 1790, Musgrave was her maiden name and her married name was Callard. Unless she reverted to her maiden name, which is possible, it isn't her. I know there was some confusion in Australia as to what was her daughter, Sarah's, maiden name. She was supposedly Sarah Musgrave Sloman, nee Callard, but in one record (off hand think her death cert) she was written as Sarah Sloman nee Musgrave.. Then using a surname as a second name can be confusing ..
If I find anything out about Baghay farm I will let you know. You would think there is some connection with the family working at the same farm, but they might be second or third cousins. Being ag labs they would have been living in farm cottages. Charlene where did you find the 1859 burial please? Last edited by tenterfieldjulie; 11-05-13 at 08:47. |

Betty Musgrave
Interesting question - I have it as a note on my records beside her name as I'm working to trying and link people together. I also printed off a number of lists a few years ago from the Milverton website.
However, check Sep 1859 Vol 5c, pg 225 on Free BMD. It gives her name and confirms death date, but not her age which I seem to have record of. I will try to find it again for you. Regards, Charlene |

The burial is on here, but I agree it is unlikely to be the right Betty as she would have been buried under her married name:

I found a marriage 18/7/1798 at Milverton of James Musgrave and Betty Bond, so this is quite possibly this is the Betty Musgrave buried 1859 aged 80.
I keep hoping that the gap in the Milverton burial register between Feb 1860 and March 1890 will suddently fill in and I might find her .. I hope when I get to Taunton RO that they might those records. |
